Can the Quick Launch area be enlarged?
In previous versions of Windows I remember that I was able
to click and drag that area to include more icons in
immediate view.

Right click on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
In the menu that pops up, click on "Lock the Taksbar" to remove
the check mark.
You should now see a dotted line to the right of the Quick
Launch area.
Click on this bar and hold down the mouse button while dragging
it to the right.
You can now drag and drop whatever shorcuts you want to the
Quick Launch area.
When you're done go back and click on "Lock the Taksbar".

Note: You can add shorcuts to the Quick Launch area, move the
bar back to the left and get a double arrow which when clicked
on will launch a menu showing the hidden shortcuts.

John should also note that Quick Launch is not an "area" of the
task bar, it's a completely separate tool bar. Although it
appears on the task bar by default, it can be dragged off of it
and placed elsewhere. One place that works well for many people
is on the left side of the screen.
