My cousin sent me a CD with a huge mpg movie of a family get together
years ago. Unfortunately, there is a continuous hiss in the
soundtrack. Does anybody know of freeware (and I've looked all around)
that can modify/edit/enhance the sound track on an MPG?

TIA

Nope, there is no freeware that I can find.

Convert the movie into an AVI and convert the sound into mp3 format at
the same time and save the movie.

Load the clip into Virtual Dub again and save the WAV as/Filename.MP3
Confusing, but true!

Important to understand that the file is not a wav, it is a defect in
the terminology of the author.

You now have to convert the file into a genuine MP3 format for which I
have been unable to find a good freeware product.

I use non-freeware Cool Edit mPro (now gobbled up by Adobe who will no
doubt ruin the product.) to convert sound files into a genuine mp3
format. It will also remove hiss and pops, which is your goal.

Use MP3Gain to adjust the volume to 89db.

Use Nandub to add the sound to the avi clip.
Use Virtual Dub to change the sound from VBR to CBR.
Now use TMPGEnc to convert the movie back to MPG format.

Easy ain't it? LMAO

Cheers,

Sundry Info:-

Virtual Dub
Best freeware movie editor available for AVI and MPG formats.

Learn how To use it:

MPGJoin
Google for the latest version - Does what it says.

MPGTX
Google for the latest version - Joins & Splits MPG files into playable
parts.

WinRAR
Google for it. Compresses MPG files because the format is not
compressed well compared to Divx or Xvid. I am not talking DVD here.

WMV, RM, RAM & MOV:
Piss-poor quality formats. Avoid them as much as possible because they
trade quality for streaming and you can't edit the movies easily as
you can an AVI or MPG clip.

RM Converter from Boilsoft will convert RM's. $$$

MOV clips don't convert well with Quacktime Pro. $$$

TMPGEnc is a Freeware program for non-commercial users.
Converts WMV, DVD, or AVI to MPG1 or MPG2

Good place for templates (MPG1 & MPG2)

I forgot to add that when the installer asks for a serial number you just
enter any number you wish.

Thanks for trying Jason, but I don't think that will do what I want.

(big snip, but keeping copy of the message for reference)

Cable,
I found out that it was Windows Media Player that was causing the
problem (as usual). When I ran the MPG in my commercial DVD player,
the hiss disappeared. Thanks anyway.

VirualDub can directly extract a wav file from an mpeg1 file; no need
to convert to avi. Use a freeware wav editor (Audacity, for example??)
to get rid of hiss; no need to convert to mp3. Use TMPGenc to
remultiplex the video portion of the mpg file with the wav file. Of
course, you'll need VCDEasy to extract the .DAT file from the CD and
convert it to a conforming mpg file.

Most of the freeware joiners I've tried don't correctly append video
files. TMPGenc does the best job for a freeware.

Byte for byte, a wmv file will give much higher quality than an mpeg1.
WinXP MovieMaker2 can edit wmv files just as easily as avi files.
Other (payware) video editors can also open wmv files.

My cousin simply put the huge .mpg file on a cdr and sent it to me.
There isn't any .dat file.

The only program that you mention which I don't have is VirtualDub.
I'll get it now. Thanks.

I've used MPGJoin before and "Cable" is correct. It works perfectly.
