EngraversGothic BT looks different on Win XP / Word 2007 than Win 2K / Word 2K

On our old Win2K systems, I had a font named "EngraversGothic BT"
which we use in out letterhead templates (dozens of them).

We just bought new computers running WinXP. The "EngraversGothic BT"
font on these machines has a much different appearance. I just printed
the exact same document on both machines. On the new machines, the
font is slightly larger and much darker (like bold). It looks more
like a bold Arial font.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Should the same font look the same on both systems?

2. Is there some way for me to tell if it is the same font?

3. If it is not, can I copy the old font to the new systems?

3.a. If so, how do I find it?

Any other suggestions?

I just want the documents to look the same as they did.
 
I can answer at least one question: on the old machine, open the Windows
Fonts folder. Right-click on the Engravers Gothic BT font and choose
Properties. Note the filename. I have a font called Engravers MT with the
filename ENGR.TTF; it is a serif font (see
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/agfa/engravers-mt/engravers-mt/). Is it
possible that this is what you want rather than Engravers Gothic BT
("gothic" = sans serif)? In any case, you can copy the font to a floppy, CD,
flash drive, etc., and transfer it to the new machine.

Note that Engravers MT (v. 1.60) is/was included with Access 97 SR2, Office
2000 Premium, Office 97 Small Business Edition SR2, Office 97 SR1a, Office
Professional Edition 2003, PhotoDraw 2000, Picture It! 2000, Picture It!
2002, Picture It! 98, Publisher 2000, Publisher 97, Publisher 98, Works
2002. If Engravers Gothic MT comes with any MS product, then
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/default.aspx has not been updated
to reflect this (I doubt it would have come with Office 2007, since its new
fonts all begin with C).

It's ENGRGOTN.TTF. I didn't need to right-click. The filename is
displayed in Explorer.

machines. Sure enough, on one, there is no ENGRGOTN.TTF and on the
other there is.

I have no idea why two brand new machines set up at the same time with
the same software, would have different fonts. One is a laptop, but
that should not make any difference.

In any case, how to I extract the font from the one and copy it to the
other?

I couldn't figure out how to extract the font from the WinXP system,
but I did find it in c:\WINNT\Fonts on the Win2K system. I copied it
to the machine that was missing it and now all is happy. Thanks

The reason I suggested opening the Fonts folder in Control Panel rather than
viewing it in Windows Explorer is that the filenames of many fonts don't
bear any relation to the font names (some are intentionally named with
cryptic numbers). Once you've found the font by its name, you can then find
the filename as I suggested. As mentioned, that font is not included in any
Microsoft product, so you presumably got it somewhere else.
In any case, how to I extract the font from the one and copy it to the
other?

If you're comfortable using Explorer and can't figure out how to copy a file
from one drive to another (using Copy or by dragging), then I don't know how
to help you.

Ok. They were the same in this case. I didn't realize they could be
different.
Once you've found the font by its name, you can then find
the filename as I suggested. As mentioned, that font is not included in any
Microsoft product, so you presumably got it somewhere else.

I dunno. Two brand new machines with the OEM sofware deleted and a
clean WinXP Pro and a clean Office 2007 Pro installed.
If you're comfortable using Explorer and can't figure out how to copy a file
from one drive to another (using Copy or by dragging), then I don't know how
to help you.

The question was *where* to copy it. I know how to copy. Please don't
be patronizing.

I ended up just dragging it to the Fonts applet in Control Panel. You
could have said that. There is no \Fonts folder in WinXP and I thought
the fonts needed to be installed -- not just copied.

Anyway, it works now. Thanks for the help.
 
The "Fonts applet in Control Panel" is what I meant by the "Fonts folder in
Control Panel." It's just a different way of looking at the folder.

As for copying, I was suggesting you copy the font from wherever you are
seeing it in Windows Explorer (if it's not in a folder, where is it?) to a
removable drive of some description. Then, on the destination machine, you
can open the Fonts folder, select File | Install New Font, and navigate to
the removable drive where the copied font resides.
