English/American AV Question

Hi All
I noticed that in USA, many people don't use Norton/Symmantec or McAffee AV
programs, the two very popular choices in UK. In all UK tech-y magazines,
Norton/Symmantec & McAffee often get good critiques, whereas other AVs don't
come even close. Quite frankly, I never heard of Kaspersky before I started
reading posts here. Do UK/US PCs get different viruses or something?
Cheers

Well, this post made my day :)

I'm guessing you're sincere but clueless, so I'll respond. I simply
can't imagine a troll asking such a question.

The answer to your question is "no, of course not". I seriously doubt
that the situation in the UK is any different than here in the USA in
regard to PC mag articles on antivirus products and their worthless
recommendations. The mags simply recommend products from vendors
who pay them big money for advertising. Also, your impression that
McAfee/NAV aren't big here in the USA with the clueless .... just as
they are with the clueless in the UK ... is wrong. It's all a matter
of knowing there are better products available no matter where in the
world you live.

That's not to say there aren't regional outbreaks of certain malwares
from time to time, but that's a different matter. Antivirus products
aren't generally optimized for certain geographical regions.

Well, maybe I am clueless, but appart from Norton/McAffee, the only other AV
stuff you can find in shops here is ZoneAlarm (quite rare that you find it)
and Panda (even rarer). Just as a test, try and buy Kaspersky on
www.eBay.co.uk - searching 'kaspersky antuvirus' returns 0 results!

Spelling it "antIvirus" gives three international results.
Just "Kaspersky" gives 8 results from UK sellers.

B'sides, why would you buy it from fleaBay, rather than the vendor's own
site?

I got three hits by spelling correctly as Kaspersky antivirus :)
However, all three were for USA stores. I know there used to be
UK distributors of KAV, as it's called. Dunno if there are any now
or not, off hand.

Never heard of Google search? Put Kaspersky antivirus into a
search engine and you'll quickly find this:
http://www.kaspersky.com/
where you can find where to download evaluation versions and
also see how you can purchase their products.

Here's something else you might consider. AOL offers a free
version of KAV called AVS which you can download:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
This free version lacks a couple of the modules of the paid
version but otherwise it is the latest version 6. It has the
basic file and email modules only ... plus auto or manual
updating. Just don't opt to install the Toolbar during
installation.

Kaspersky isn't the only av product often recommended
here, of course. Some prefer NOD32, for example. In fact,
some people prefer free scanners such as Antivir and Avast
to McAfee and NAV ... just to mention a few alternatives.

stuff you can find in shops?

well, gosh, there's the source of your perceptual bias right there...
that just shows you whose got the biggest market share... where i am
(canada) i mostly only see norton and mcafee in the stores too, but i'm
smart enough not to buy it (or most of the other software that's in
stores)...
