Endnote numbering

When attempting to merger chapters in a book, the endnotes will automatically renumber. I need to keep the endnote numbers seperate in each chapter. Example: Chapter One has 5 endnotes and Chapter Two has 8 endnotes. When merging the Chapters into one document, they automatically number 1 to 13. Is there a way I can override this feature?
