endless problems with vista

new machine + vista networked to xp with switch box. Music CD plays through
external speakers on XP but no sound, either built-in vista speakers or
external when CD played on vista. Not even the Windows Vista login tone,
there is no sound from the machine. Please help!

You should post to the correct Vista NG, Setup or General.

When you take Mr. Arnold's advice, include details on your Vista machine
that will help others help you.
From what you've said so far, it sounds like a sound card/chip driver issue.
Have you acquired and installed the latest Vista drivers for your sound?
