end task issue

not sure when i am in a program all the sudden the end task box will pop up and it will freeze, won't end the program or let me continue with what i was doing i have to restart computer. i am working with windows xp professional. it's driving me nuts, can someone help me
 
go to dos and type "EVENTVWR" without the quotation marks and check the event viewer for anything suspicious.
