Hi all,
I have a problem with WinXP home edition. If I have a program that
seems to be hanging (eg explorer) and click on the 'X' to close the
window, I get the 'Program is not responding' dialogue box. If I click
on 'end now' the program is closed by XP but I loose all my desktop
icons and the task bar. I still have a mouse cursor and the computer
is still running but I cannot access anything, even pressing the
windows key on my keyboard does not bring up the start menu.

The only way I have been able to get out of the situation is to kill
the power to the pc, reboot the system and go through the usual disc
checking stage but of course I loose all unsaved data.

Please can anyone help as this is driving me crazy, it happens quite
often, especially when trying to explore a network drive that does not
respond so I end up powering down and loosing stuff almost daily.
Thanks, Boggie

You can try crtl+alt+del and then on the tasks bar click
the offending program (explorer.exe or whatever) and end
task. This sometimes, though not always, seems to solve
that problem.
