ENCRYPTION

I had a computer that I had to return to Best Buy. The motherboard had to be
replaced but their tech support has informed me that they cannot recover any
of my data since there is an encryption with Windows XP. Can you tell me if
there is a way to unlock this. I would hate to lose all the data on my
computer.

Thank you for your help

Dan;
How was the data encrypted?
Did you use EFS?
If so, you need the original profile to decrypt the data:

If it is not encrypted it may simply be an Ownership issue, #9 on this
link:

If this is the case and the tech is referring to this as encrypted,
find a qualified tech, the one you have now is not qualified since
this is an Ownership issue and not an encryption issue.

Just to Clarify and add to Jupiter's post, encryption is something you need
to have made a conscious effort to have done. Your information is not
encrypted by default in Windows XP. If that is the assumption made by Best
Buy, they are incorrect. In other words, unless you used XP's data
encryption or some third party encryption, your data is not encrypted.
