Hi,

I am searching a decrypter-encrypter software that would allow to encrypt
data/files, but that teh user would not need to have to decrypt.
That is user should be able to decrypt simply by entering the password, and
not need to install the decrypter on his own machine.

I know it exists ( sure I have read it somewhere in a magazine), but at that
time didn't need it, and discarded that reference !

TIA !

A friend and I have been using "Iron Key" for years, and does exactly
what you want: http://www.kryptel.com/products/ikey/index.php

Basically, you select a file, supply a password, and the file gets
encrypted (128-bit strength). You then run this encrypted file like
a normal exe, but you are prompted for the password before it's
extracted to a nominated folder.

Forgot to mention: you can also drag-and-drop files onto the "Iron Key"
icon to encrypt them, or you can even right-click them and select
"Encrypt" from the pop-up context menu. This app kicks ass! :)

No.
Start program -> Options -> Self Decrypting File : that creates a file that
will auto-decrypt ( after correct password has been entered) when you
double-click it.

Hmmm, by following your instructions I'm able to create an .exe file,
but when I click on it I get an error message that says,

"Windows cannot access the specidfied device, path, or file. You may
not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

It doesn't prompt me for a password.

Thanks.

Yikes! I got exactly the same error message when I tried to use Iron
Key. Do these programs have problems with WinXP?

I use MIT's PGP Freeware:
http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html

There's also this one but I haven't used it:
http://www.pgp.com/downloads/freeware/index.html

It doesn't say it lacks that functionality so it should work too (I'm
going to try it now).

Perhaps, because I'm using XP-SP1a and have no problem at all !
Perhaps it is interfering with some SP2 feature : cyphering service ?
Firewall ? Antivirus ?
Don't know SP2 so cannot really help ! Try in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general for help.
BUT the 2 progs work on XP and ask for the password when double-clicked.
