Hi,
I encrypted my files and folders and saved them in a hard drive (regular
back up). However, since I restored my computer to the original
manufacturer's configuration, I cannot open the files because it tells me
"access denied".
I use Windows XP Professional to encrypt the files. Any help to open these
files will be greatly appreciated.

thank you.

Do you a complete backup from before you performed the restore? Was the
computer in a workgroup or a member of a domain?
If you don't have a backup and if the computer was a member of a domain
then you have permanently lost access to those encrypted files.

Hi Paul,
It is a personal computer, and I do have other backups, from the same file.
However, the last backup I have (encrypted) has aproximately two weeks worth
of latest data. However, this is not a full back up. Do you thinks that I
will not be able to retrieve the data from this latest file back up.
So, what is the safest way to back up my files/encrypt them, and be able to
restore it without a problem.

Any help is much appreciated.

Just pointing out it appears Paul typo'd to omit a "not" in
"and if the computer was" _not_ "a member of a domain"
as Paul absolutely did know one went there.

So, basically I have lost these files?
What is your advice on encrypting files and making sure to retrieve them
when they are encrypted?
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for the catch and correction Roger!
