I would like to encrypt offline files on a laptop that is part of a workgroup
with no windows server, however when I set it to encrypt the files, the synch
fails with an "access denied" error. My research so far tells me that I need
some kind of encryption certificate for this to work. Is there any
documentation you can point me to that details how to make his work?

thanks

I am assuming you mean the Microsoft EFS encryption found in XP Pro, if so
then the following links may be of use. Used incorrectly EFS can render you
files totally unaccessable.
