Linda

I have found Winchat in the registry. I just need to
know how to enable it. Currently under Data it says
(value not set).

Hello Linda,

[Start] | Help & Support | winchat [Enter]
gives zero results (local and online)

Winchat does not appear to be part of Windows XP.

A search for winchat at http://www.google.com
gave me more than 10,000 results.

The first result wants $199.

The second result reads,
"WinChat IRC Network
Enter WinChat BB. Enter WinChat Site.
www.winchat.net/"

Clicking on that hyperlink took me to
http://www.winchat.net/ which automatically went to
http://www.winchat.net/winchat/default.html
which says, in part,

"You can _connect_ to WinChat.Net by pointing your
IRC client at irc.winchat.net."

Clicking on the "_connect_" hyperlink took me to
another page which says, in part,

"Connect right now using your browser. A Web-based
client will open from this link."

Clicking on that hyperlink connected me to IRC.

Feel free to try any of the 10,000 results.

/BYE Jan

It's part of WfW 3.11, NT 3.x, and Windows 95. It also seems to be in XP Embedded (I just wonder if it's the same program or a different one with same name - on the Accessories menu according to MSDN).

I did type in Winchat at the Run command. It brought up
a Chat window. I went to Conversation - Dial and entered
the name of another computer but the person at the other
computer never got a chat window. I am assuming Winchat
needs to be enabled in the registry.

That is normal, Linda. Go to Start/Run and type in: winchat

Hello Kelly,

On my XP Pro,
[Start] | Help & Support | winchat [Enter]
gives zero results (local and online)

Winchat does not appear to be part of Windows XP.

However, if I [Start] | Run | winchat [Enter]
I get a chat window.

So is my "Help & Support" defective?

I found at,

exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20646141.html

"Comment from Crash2100 Date: 06/12/2003 10:06AM PDT
If that doesn't help, take a look at some of the registry
hacks for ToolTip's on this site, they're on the bottom
third of the page:

Were they running WinChat as well? The other machine must be running
WinChat as well, or the Network DDE service must be set to Started (and set
to Automatic, if you don't want to have to do this every time). WinChat
starts the Network DDE service when its loaded. However, like you, I was
unable to get this app to work tonight on my LAN. Wonder if an update
broke something?
