hi..
i have just promoted a windows 2000 adv server to domain controller for a
test domain at home. I did this so i could learn how to work with the active
directory structure and objects via ldap. However, when i try to access ldap
the system tells me that the server is unavailable. Are there any special
settings i need to have to enalb ldap to accessible from other machines?

Thank you in advanced for your help.

No there are not. This is likely a DNS issue. Ensure that the DC points to
itself for DNS and that your client is also pointing to the DC for DNS. Do
not point any of the boxes at public DNS servers; use internal ones only.
Configure a forwarder on the DNS server for external name resolution.

On the client, or DC, type the following into a command prompt to verify the
DC is advertising itself as a DC (and an LDAP server);

C:\>nslookup
