Hi, I am the administrator but would like to keep file and printer sharing
off, in the local area connection controls, because I've been advised to do
so for security reasons. When I want to share files in my home network, I
would like to have the option of turning file and printer sharing on, from
within my user account. Permissions don't allow me to do this. Is there a
way around this problem?

Daniel

An administrator should be able to enable file and print sharing. What
happens when you try it? Any particular error message? A properly configured
firewall [including host firewall], correct share permissions, strong
passwords, keeping current with critical security updates, and possibly
using an ipsec policy can go a long way to mitigating threats of using file
and print sharing if you find it is something you want to use. --- Steve

No, there is really no way to delegate enabling that to a
plain user account.
Why don't you consider having it enabled on your internal
network interface, but use the firewall to configure that to
be allowed only for the IPs in use on your home network?

Hi Roger. Thank you for your response. I'm new to this. Could you explain
wht the 'internal network interface' is? And where do I get access to the
firewall controls in Norton?

Thank you for your help,
Daniel

Hi
By internal I just meant the interface that is on the home network,
which might be the only network interface on your machine.
Sorry, but I do not use Norton
The Windows firewall allows one to set a scope for the different
exceptions (things that are allowed) so I was suggesting that you
just use this capability and scope the file and print to the IPs that
are internal (private) to your home network.
