Accidentally , I disabled recording on my DVD rewriter . Now , the
"recording" tab has disappeared ( when I right click and select properties on
this drive ) and I'd like to know how to get it back because I can't use the
CD Writing Wizard , or make a CD with WMP anymore . I am running Windows XP
SP2 with a BenQ DVD rewriter .
Please help !

Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services..... find the IMAPI service and set it
to Automatic or Manual. It's probably set to Disabled right now.

The native CD recording program within Windows XP
only records to CD-R or CD-RW drives. In order to
record to a DVD-R or DVD-RW drive, you need to install
a third-party DVD recording program, such as Nero, or reinstall
the DVD recording program that came with your DVD recording drive.

I'm afraid this didn't help , but thanks anyway . What it it , is I right
clicked the drive , chose properties , then chose the recording tab and
deselected the enable recording on this drive box . Now there is no longer a
recording tab when I select properties , just general , auto play and
hardware and it's this tab I'd like to get back .

Even if you disabled CD-Recording you will still have the recording tab.
This doesnt sound like an issue with something you disabled. I believe this
is a bad DVD writer drive (hardware or software). If you uninstall the DVD
in device manager let windows find the software and reinstall it, you may
find that the tab is back. Otherwise try another DVD writer because it is
probably your hardware.

Everything was working fine before I accidentally deselected that tab ( see
above message ) and this drive would write CD's with the CD Writing Wizard ,
even if it wasn't supposed to ! Now I can't use the send to option or copy to
in the task pane . D is not accessible it says !

Looks like my drive is toast ! Thanks for all the help guys , at least I've
eliminated everything else .

Before you toss the drive out, if all else has failed, you may be able to
update the drives firmware..
Use the Nero infotool to id the drive string and firmware version..
http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/NeroInfotool/neroinfotool.html
Your drives make and model #, id string, FW ver are key to identifying any
available firmware updates..
Get the update for the xp cd wiz here..
http://www.highmat.com/download/
Read up on cd burning in XP here.. see section #8 cdgone.reg might work to
clear things up in the registry..

Also, have you tried to reinstall/update your burning app lately?

I genuinely appreciate all the help I got here . I tried all of the excellent
suggestions and am now convinced that my drive is bad . Before I buy a new
one , I might try physically removing and reinstalling the present one just
incase . Thanks everyone for your time and effort . I was very impressed by
the speed and quality of the replies.

Cheers .

Are both optical drives on the same secondary IDE channel with a UDMA mode 2
showing in device manager under IDE ATA/ATPI controllers, advanced settings
tab?
Have you set the jumpers on the drives to master and slave properly? In the
bios are they set to auto detect? I prefer to to use the secondary IDE
channel for my optical drives and the primary IDE channel for my hard drives
(UDMA mode 5)..
This is just an old habit of mine and has served me well so far..
Just hate to see a drive finnally give up the ghost, I guess..
Good luck..

I was able to get the recording tab back by editing the registry ( Microsoft
knowledge base article "CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a
recordable device " ) , but it still doesn't recognize any brand of new
recordable disc in the drive . It is probably a kind of conflict between CD
burning wizard and some third party software . Thanks Jaymon for your latest
suggestions . All that seems to check out .
