Setup: 1 xp-home laptop, disabled norton internet security firewall;
1 vista business desktop, McAfee virus protection and firewall, 1 shared
network drive.

Both connected to internet through the same hub. Both can get on the
internet. Both can ping each other.

On the vista machine, if i go to network i can see a whole bunch of people's
computers. If i go to my network places in xp, I can only see my own xp
machine.

Ultimately, I want to be able to map the vista shared drive on the laptop.

I have tried going Start-> Run...-> \\vista-pc\sharedName but that didn't
work.

I'm really confused so any help is appreciated.

Dan,

You have either a problem with NetBT, or a personal firewall problem.

You can possibly diagnose the problem(s), using logs from "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):
