Upon starting Windows Mail (before a Send/Recv is initiated) I get
immediately as many as a dozen blank messages...no sender; no addressee and
no text. All I see displayed is an unopened envelope icon. Is this a bug or
a bad installation?

It's a bug, called "ghost messages" and has been reported many times. It
may or may not be fixed before final release but until then, highlight them
and press the Del key.

I get these, in both Vista and XP - I think they are some kinda spam.
I got them once in awhile before I ever put Vista on the machine.

I have yet to get a single one in Vista Build 5744, but yes I got them all
the time before now.
