Empty Index when displaying Help Topics

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the index tab of the help
system of any software displayed an empty list. I thought
that the index files (.chw) were corrupted and I hence
deleted it (so it could be built again the next time I
open the .chm) Now hh.exe raises a 'memory could not be
read' error when I select the 'index' tab. Here is what I
tried so far:
-uninstalling and reinstalling an application e.g. msdn,
-replacing hh.exe
Both methods didn't solve the problem.

Any idea what could be wrong? Does anyone know what are
all the files/registry keys that are used by the help
system?

I'm running W2K SP3 on a P4 2.4GHz 256MB RAM, 26GB Free
Disk space

Thank a lot for any suggestion,

Olivier

Download the Help files for your version of Windows 2000 from the following
Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/helpfiles/default.asp

Delete the files in the C:\WINNT\Help folder (you may wish to back up the
folder first *GOOD IDEA*), and then extract the downloaded files into the
C:\WINNT\Help folder.

Thanks for replying.
I tried this, but it didn't solve the problem; even
wordpad.chm raises the error when I select the Index tab.
I think this issue is caused by the help application, or
by some system conflict (It used to work fine)?
Any more hint?

Olivier

I'd recommend that you run MJ's Help Diagnostics, available from:

http://helpware.net/downloads/index.htm#MJs

This will check that all the help runtime components are properly
installed and registered.

You could also try deleting or renaming the file "hh.dat", which you
should find in this subdirectory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help

The hh.dat file stores user-specific information on all the HTML Help
files on your system (favourite topics, changes that you've made to
the size and position of a help window, etc.), and can cause the files
to misbehave if it has somehow been corrupted. Windows will create a
new version of hh.dat when you next open any .chm file.
