We purchased several lap tops for our field sales reps.
We lost one due to adverse separation. Now we have a lap
top that has a log on code we do not know and the
individual refuses to provide us with the security access
that windows requires. We need help. Please let us know
what to do.

The rep should only have his login details. You should have the local
administrator password. It sounds like you didn't part ways on the best of
terms so I would be suspicious of the contents of the machine. It is possible
to reset the password, but given the circumstances, I would put the hard
drive in another computer to retreive the data then format and reinstall
windows.

A great tool set that we have used is winternals, they
have tools that will reset any local account password and
other remote utilities for systems that are down and other
uses. I was suprised at the low cost and you may find it
useful in the days ahead.

You can reset the administrator password with a program that fits on a
floppy:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

It's a linux kernel, so you can even toy around with the files on your hard
drive if you need to recovery any.
Quick warning before you use it: Don't play with the syskey functions, and
most of the default values will work.
The utility doesn't work so great when you try to change the password, make
the password blank by putting in '*' and booting to local administrator with
that.
