Shouldn't the Emergency Repair Diskette be bootable? Mine doesn't.

No. To use the emergency Repair diskette you need to boot on the CD or
the 4 boot floppies you can create from the CD and select the repair
option. The Emergency Repair Diskette contains information that tells
the repair process the state of your system at the time it was created.

Ok, thanks for the info. The only CD I have is a "recovery" CD. I don't
think the recovery CD has an option for creating any boot floppies, but I
could be wrong about that. Do the boot floppies allow one to get to a
command line prompt, with access to the HDD's file system (which is what I
was originally after when I came across the ERD option)?

I believe you're correct. You can download the 4 boot floppies from

What they do is start a normal setup, the "recovery" CD often formats
the harddrive and puts the computer back to it's original condition as
it came from the factory, not what you want to do if you want to save
anything! By starting a normal setup, you'll be offered a chance to
select the repair option and then use the ERD to repair what might be
wrong.

You can also "browse" the recovery CD and see what's there? Some
computers have the Windows .cab files stored on the HD and the restore
CD merely points to them, if that's the case on your computer I'd
really think about buying a Win2000 CD, formatting the entire hard
drive and doing a fresh install!

RANT MODE ON:
BTW, did I mention I hate restore CDs and the companies who offer them?
One reason I always build my own computers from components I select and
buy the full versions of any software I want. just my own opinion.
RANT MODE OFF:

I feel *MUCH* better now....
