(I am a beginner with Excel)
Each month I send an email with an xls attachment. The xls contains
cells which contain quotation reference numbers for Word documents.
This is for ISO2000 documentation tracking.

Now I also send seperate emails each with the Word quotation attached
but I'm being told that when these emails are later opened the
attachment is not always present.

Is it possible for me to link the quotation to the cell so that after
emailing the xls the recipient can open the Word quotation by clicking
on the relevant cell?

I'm not sure you could link the files. I think it would depend on the order and
location that the recipient saved the attachments.

I think I'd zip all the files into one .zip file (http://www.winzip.com is one
version of a file compression program).

I would think by creating a zip file, it would be easier to manage, too. If you
find the .zip file, you've found all the files.

You may want to look at embedding the word documents directly into the
worksheet.

Insert|objects|Create from file (and display as icon, and don't link to the
document)

(I've never used this for any real work, but I've received a few that seem to
work ok.)

Beemer,

You can embed the Word document (or part thereof) in the Excel sheet. Copy
from Word. In Excel, Edit (or right-click) - Paste special - Microsoft Word
document Object. You could then use a hyperlink (Insert - Hyperlink) in a
cell to link to whereever you'd embedded the Word doc in the Excel workbook.
