Hi,
the hard disk on my pc a packard bell aloh@ with windows me embedded on the
hard drive has failed,
i bought a new hard drive and contacted packard bell who said they would
supply new recovery cds at 42 euros.which is fine but they said i would need
tech support which will cost 49 euros !!.

for what he said on the phone the cds will embed them selfs on the hard
drive, and he said i would need to access files on the cds which only tech
support could advice.

for me its not a problem to format and partition the drive if needed.
question,
if i get the cd`s from packard bell is not a matter of just putting the
recovery floppy disk in and then the recovery cds
in and they should partition, format and install them selfs on the new hard
drive.
so i don`t need tech support!. or it`s not as easy as that and i need tech
support?.

Any ideas
Thanks
Brendan

Hi Brendan,

in my experience on friend's and families pcs, you should be able to just do
as you say:

pop in the floppy or bootable cd and be away.

you sure you didn't get these system restore cds etc with the pc? you
usually do

Karl

no i did`t get any cd`s with the pc only a recovery floppy windows me was
embedded on the hard disk which has failed so i now have a new hard disk and
need to get recovery cd`s from packard bell.

i think it should be as easy as putting in the floppy and recovery cd`s and
i don`t need tech support which will cost extra

see this is the problem, the pc only came with a recovery floppy disk
windows me was pre-installed/embedded on the hard disk the hard disk has
failed.
so i now have a failed hard disk and a recovery floppy disk the floppy disk
is no good as the hard drive and windows me on it have failed.
So i need recovery cd`s and a new hard disk
the hard disk i have, packard bell will send new recovery cd`s

the question is, can i using the new recovery cd`s that will be sent by
packard bell install windows me on the NEW hard drive without buying tech
support(49 euros)
or do i need tech support to install the system.

yeah you are right, how do you mean "embedded"?

do you mean pre-installed?

Some OEMs don't include a restore CD set, but store a copy of the
working HDD image on a hidden partion on the HDD, and use a floppy or
CD based software to restore the system using the hidden image.

If there's a recovery set on the old drive in a hidden partition it may be
accessible by mounting the old drive as a slave on another machine and
copying the files to your new drive. Saving you the cost of CDs and tech
support.

Download/copy a Windows ME OEM version. Install it using the Windows
licence key that came with your Packard Bell. This is completely 100%
legal as the licence coves the right to use and not the media. Use
Aida32 (www.aida32.hu) to find out what hardware is in there and
download drivers from the manufacturers websites. Download utilities
for keyboard etc from Packard Bell.

Finally, send PB customer support a nasty e-mail stating that you think
the charge of 42¤ for a restore CD of an OS near end of life is
absolutely disgusting and that Dixons supply restore CDs for their
Advent range for £6.

Possible but then they will also need a copy of Partition Magic as its a
hidden partition and not accessible without changing its status.
However the user as already stated the HDD is dead so chances of success are
slim to none and if he does manage to retrieve the data can he be 100% sure
its not corrupt?

Personally I would rather obtain a set of restore CD's (not too expensive)
and re-tattoo the HDD and be sure of having a working restore package for
future mishaps..and as I've already told him how to re-tattoo his drive
there is no need for tech support from PB.

All he needs to do is place the Master CD1 in his cd drive.
Reboot using the Emergency Boot Disk (RED)
Drop to a DOS prompt after the errors and enter the command EXTHS /RESTORE
and reboot....job done.
