I use MS Outlook 2000 and my ISP is Virgin. I occasionally receive
notification that I have an email and when I open it I get a message that the
email has been moved or deleted. When I go into my ISP server I see an email
in my inbox that has not been downloaded to my pc. Virgin say that they only
support Outlook Express and cannot help me. Can anyone else explain what my
problem is and/or how to put it right? I have re-created my email account
settings but this made no difference.

Hello James,

Your question would be better placed in a newsgroup dedicated to
Outlook, as this newsgroup is rather dedicated to the dotnet platform.
Well, Outlook Express is often installed with the system (although this
appears controversial), if you have it you can try, as your ISP provides
support on it ... This would at least give you some tips.

So, you say you see a mail on the webmail interface, and it is not
downloaded by Outlook ?

One thing to verify is whether Outlook did not consider it as a spam.

Does it happen only with a specific message, or does this happen with
any message you receive ? The problem is not the same at all -and what I
suggested in the previous paragraph only applies to the first case
(except if Outlook is parametrized very paranoid :) ).

An usual way to debug problems with the pop protocol is to use the
telnet program, but this supposes you know the pop protocol, so you have
to read a documentation on it first. The advantage is that you exactly
know the answer of the server to each solicitation, and you can
establish whether the problem is on the server or in the parameters of
your software -in this case Outlook.

The site I know about mail and the pop protocol is very clear, but in
French :

http://www.iprelax.fr/pop/

I imagine your preferred search engine will show you something
satisfying in English (perhaps a search on Telnet can help).
