I have just starting having problems sending emails from Windows mail. Each
time I send the email gets stuck in the outbox and does not move. I click on
the send/receive tab and the following message comes up.
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject '', Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Server:
'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F.
If I keep hitting the send/recieve tab it eventually goes but problem seems
to be getting worse. I have Norton scanning my emails, should this be
disabled? If so how do I do this and what potential problems could this
cause? I am pretty sure the POP details are correct as I have been using this
email with no problems for the past year.
Many thanks

Most versions of the Norton antivirus software eventually cause problems
in Windows Mail, but it often takes months for this to happen. In some
antivirus programs, leaving email scanning disabled helps, but I don't
know if there are any Norton versions where this applies or how to do
it if it does. In most versions of the Norton antivirus software, you
can't disable email scanning, even if you disable the rest of the program,
and you need to uninstall it instead. You then often need to run this
cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall left behind:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You sometimes also need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and create the account again. See here
on whether there are any new details on how to create such an account:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-08.html

These instructions were written for Outlook Express, but should also
work under Windows Mail. You might need the part of the instructions
near the bottom about changing the port number.

If restarting Windows Mail after this doesn't empty the Outbox, try
moving all the messages there to the Drafts folder or deleting them.
If you find any messages that refuse to do either, them download
and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version of the hotfix first.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems in Windows Mail. Most
versions of the McAfee antivirus software and a recent version of the
Trend antivirus software are not good choices; they cause problems
in Windows Mail too. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one
with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

Symantec, who invented email scanning in their Norton antivirus
program line, admits that it isn't necessary:

Thanks for your reply. I have not tried any of your suggestions as yet as the
problem is not stopping completely from using email. However this evening it
seems to have reached its worse point. I tried to send an email and the same
message as I originally had came up. I disabled my outgoing and incoming
email scanning within Norton and tried to send another email and this message
appeared.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E.

I hit Send/Receive about ten times and eventually the message went from my
out to the intended recipient but this whole process is very dull. I am not
an expert on computers so the most simple method to sort this problem out
would be great. Am I right in thinking I should first disable the Norton
email scanner, then remove my POP3 email account (do I lose any of my
existing folders I have created within Windows mail?) and then readd my
account. After that the problem may be solved but perhaps reappear at a later
date. A better long term fix would uninstall Norton and use an Antivirus
which Windows mail prefers, correct? Any suggestions on which one to use? and
is this an easy process to go through... Sorry to bore the pants off you but
if you can point me in the right direction it would be great..

Thanks

Its best to get rid of Norton completely and then remove and reestablish
your mail account (you won't lose messages). Some report that the free
version of AVAST is okay, but you still should disable email scanning.

Gary,

This seems to have worked. Thankyou so much. A simple answer to a
complicated problem. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Thanks again

Glad to have helped.
(Deceptively simple answers often result from much research and insight.)

will getting rid of the norton e-mail scan put me at risk? is there a way to
disable just the scan on the sent e-mails?

The email scanning function is included in the AV product because all
the competitors include it, and it makes for another bullet on the box for
gullible buyers.

Even Symantec (Norton), the originator of the email scanning concept
admits that it is redundant and unnecessary:

"Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this.
To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto- Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
