I use XP at home and my email is set to empty messages from my deleted items
on exit. However I've lost an important email and attachment. Is there any
way it can be restored?

If its gone from your mail app deleted folder, its gone.
A 'paid for' service may be able to recover, at a considerable cost.
PS auto delete is a bad idea, just as a backup is a good idea

Go to this site and get a copy of dbextract.exe. It may cost you a
whopping $5.00. If you have not compacted your OE folders yet, you can
probably recover your deleted emails.

Have you checked all other folders ? Were you possibly set up to copy
messages from the sender to one ?

Assuming that you are using Outlook Express:
If Deleted Items has not been compacted you can probably recover the message
with DBXtract.
If the file has been compacted then DBXpress might be able to recover the
message from the disk.
Both are available from http://www.oehelp.com

Open the file in notepad and extract the text.
C:\Documents and Settings\David Candy\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{05F4FE83-1C81-43F2-AD7A-68D3E5C020FF}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\deleted.dbx

The long number and user name will be different for you (unless you also have a user called David Candy)..
