I have just started using Vista and have Outlook. I was able to set up one
account but not any others. In my tinkering, I have screwed that one up to.
Now I have tried using just mail and neither program will allow me to connect
to my POP server. I have uninstalled Outlook and also have reinstalled
Vista. I have installed Incredimail and it works fine. I can access my
email online. It seems to be a problem only with my computer. I am looking
for some resistual profile setting in Vista that is not allowing the
connection.

Hi, Leon.

Should be no problem - but you knew that, didn't you. :^{

I used both Windows Mail and Outlook side by side in Vista Ultimate x64 for
months. Now I've added Windows Live Mail beta (and seldom use WM at all any
more). They have no problems co-existing.
Now I have tried using just mail and neither program will allow me to
connect
to my POP server.

Are you SURE that you have the correct settings for your mail server?
Sometimes it is as simple as using "Name" instead of "(e-mail address removed)", or vice
versa. Who is your ISP and mail server? Perhaps another user here will
know about any special requirements.

Could you please post verbatim the text of any error message you are
receiving? Copy'n'Paste should work fine to do that.

I get a pop up window that has Windows Security as the title. It prompts me
to enter my user name and password. I type in my information and then it
prompts me again for the same thing. Finally I cancel and get the same
error. I have been reading about McAfee being a problem, but it is not
installed now and I am still getting this same problem. I have reinstalled
Vista and still am getting the same. I am running Vista Home Premium (32).
I know my POP settings by heart now and I can use Incredimail and use the
exact same settings and it works fine.

Here is what is said when I cancel.
Account: 'Leon', Server: 'pop.central.cox.net', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I have just purchased a new laptop and windows has dooped me into buying it
with Vista. How in the HELL do you get your email to work. I deleted my
comcast account because when I go to my desk top my new emails don't show
up. Now I am trying to set up my gmail (google mail) account. SMTP is not
working for the outgoing server. Does anyone have the correct information
for Window Mail in Vista. I DON'T LIKE VISTA I SAY, I DO NOT LIKE THIS. I
type my class papers on my laptop and them email them to my desk top. THIS
IS NOT WORKING, my papers are just sitting in here.

Did the current install of Vista ever have McAfee installed?
It sure looks like something has corrupted your password store.
Try creating a new mail account with the same settings as the
old account, then delete the old account.

Yes it did. I have tried creating accounts and deleting accounts.
Everything that I have tried has not worked. Currently McAfee is no on the
machine. What is the password store and how would I access it to delete any
old configurations. Is it possibly something with an identity file or a SQL
Server?

Normally, a corrupted password file or a corrupted account is fixed by
merely deleting that account and creating it again from scratch.
I don't know why this is not working for you.

There is nothing to stop you accessing your Gmail web interface
from both computers if they are both online.

The correct information for Gmail set up can be found on the
Gmail help pages.
Just use the settings described for Outlook Express.

My wife got a new computer and was having the same problem. She tried
something different. On the user account name, she left off the @cox.net and
it worked fine. I had restored everything to the factory and was resolved
until Microsoft was wrong. I have tried leaving the @cox.net off the user
name and it worked fine with McAfee installed and working. Just to
reiterate, I am using Outlook 2007. Maybe this is something that everyone
should try.

Regarding "leaving the @cox.net off": Cox tells you to use just the
username part, not the whole email address. It always helps to do
it the way your ISP says to.
