I have recently purchased a machine with XP professional on it.

When the machine is turned on, it lists the three profiles on the computer
and informs us about unread email available for that profile's user.

I have found that it is much more of an annoyanmce than a help because it
does not report email accurately. I go to my email client - Outlook 2003 - I
visit the web mail portals from where the email is being reported and find no
new mail.

Is there a way to turn off this service?

I do not want XP checking on my email and reporting to me that some has
arrived when my email accounts are empty.

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)

To remove an account or to change the count manually:

Start>Run>Regedit>navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.
