I just bught a new laptop with MS Vista. I understand that Windows Mail has
replaced Outlook Express and have set up contacts, preferences, and so on.
When I try to create a new email message and enter the recipients, the
recipients are shown by both their name and email address. Is there any way
for only the name to be shown? OE used to allow the preference for the
display to be set but I can't find a similar setting in Windows Mail

When you open "Contacts" there is a menu item called "views"
Select "List" in that menu.

That is a change in behaviour that was asked for hundreds of times by users
of Outlook Express, who wanted both bits of information available to them on
that line. Since MS has now made that change, I think you will have to
accept it for at least as long as those users who detested the lack of the
information in Outlook Express. Sorry.

Sorry, but that will not do what the poster is asking. The "friendly" name,
along with the complete email address will appear in the To: line when
composing a new message in mail. Users requested it, and MS agreed to it.

Problem is you can't just copy the email address. Have to copy the whole
thing now.

In order to copy just the email address you have to go to the message's
Properties.

I find it hard to believe that this was the fix for a request, to not give
any user the option to use a "Display As" for their email addresses in the
"To" line. As each Contact is made, doeasn't seem like much of a funtion to
add a check box to either allow a user to use a "Display As" or not.

The problem I have is, when sending email, everyone on that email needs to
see everyone else's email address, and if you've got a lot of addresses on
that line, it can get pretty crazy. Yes, I know in Outlook and other email
programs, if you double click on the name, it will also bring up the user,
but why blast everyones email address out there.

If you type all of the names on BCC line then nobody sees the names or
addresses of anyone else.

You are confusing what *you* see when you compose an email
with what the recipient sees when he receives that email.
The two displays are not the same.
Also, as others have noted, you can always use BCC so that
the recipient doesn't see any email addresses.

The "from" displays my emal address and the "server" name from accounts. I
tried to leave the server name blank, not allowed. I'd like it to just
display my name and leave address to be seen by clicking properties.

You will need to explain the circumstances. Is this a received
message, or a sent message, or one being composed?
I'm not aware of any normal screen that would display the
server name.

This is a new being composed email, however I did a test email and the server
name only shows on my side, not the receiving side (sorry for the firedrill).
Thanks for the quick reply.

That is correct, what you see while composing is not the same
as what the recipient sees.
