Email problem - User Error?

I already posted this once but apparently lost my connection. If this is a
repeat, I's sorry. I was just wondering if user error is causing the
problems folks arehaving with email and Internet connectivity? I use AOL and
have not had problems with either issue. I have Windows Defender set to alert
me to changes in "allowed" and in "not yet classified" applications. I do NOT
have Defender set to "apply actions" after scanning, because I would rather
examine detected issues and decide for myself. Is it possible that some users
are unknowingly blocking a component of their email or intenet connectivity
without investigating their Defender "history" to see what actions have been
applied? Just wondering. This issue seems common so it would be best if
someone with expertise would address it.

Hi Old Rebel

As I understands it and also tested it you must be
a member within "Advanced Spynet Members" to get
notifications.

So start WD > Microsoft Spynet and change to advanced members.

This was really confusing for myself beacuse the application was
totally "dead". And I really liked the messages from MSAS Beta 1.

One more great application for safer surfing is to use Siteadvisor.

Thanks for the Advanced Spynet tip. Just made the change. What do you know
about these reported email problems?

Hi

Are you using OE clean installed as mail application ?
are Hotbar or some other OE "plugin" installed ?

I can also say that I don´t understand WDs Real time protection
with all checkboxes for different agents, the logic seems to be unclear
behind them. MSAS Beta 1 was directly "logic" and easy to learn.

Within Admin tools > Logging you should also see events from
WD and perhaps you can see any blocks within the log.

I am not having the email problem personally. I use AOL client and all emails
and Internet connectivity is fine. I just wish someone would address the
problems that some of the other folks are having. I have noticed information
alerts from Defender regarding some changes to drivers being made whenever I
load AOL 9.0 Security Edition SE. Defender has not blocked anything on my PC
because I do not have it set to block anything automatically. Is is possible
that some users are having their Internet connectivity program blocked
automatically due to Defenders settings and don't even know it has been done?

Hi again

It seems that WD are doing a lot without notifys.

One Way to check this is to start WD and go to Tools >Software Explorer
and check for anything blocked.

Maybe Mr Sanderson knows more if he sees this but I belive that this
RTP functionality is somehow faulty and I cannot understand how it
works with the agents. I f I also reads about RTP there is little
explained
about it within MS documentation in help files and other docs.

Something strange is going on with my email - I just discovered it. I can
send and receive emails from my AOL mail to/from my Yahoo mail. I can receive
email at my hotmail account from AOL. BUT-I CANNOT RECEIVE ANY MESSAGES AT
AOL FROM MY HOTMAIL ACCOUNT. This is indeed STRANGE!!! There is NOTHING
blocked in my Defenders history or quarantine. Everything is allow or
ignore. None of it pertains to email.

Hi

Maybe something to test:

Disable/uncheck Real time protection within WD > General Settings
and check if your AOL mail works again.

I'll try that in a few minutes. I sent sent myself an emal from hotmail to
yahoo. It was received at Yahoo and the reply was received at hotmail. But
nothing from hotmail is being received at AOL. I don't know if this is a
Defender problem or some kind of problem in the transmission from hotmail to
AOL.

Hi

My MSN/Hotmail account works and about AOL I don´t know
where to look for status tickets about AOL mail services.

So I have no more clues, maybe to stop WD service and check again.

I don't think my specific email problem is a WinDefend problem. I can send
and receive email to and from homail and yahoo, but not hotmail to AOL. I
believe that is due to a security setting I enabled to prevent my hotmail
account from being used to spam my AOL account. I just can't remember which
accursed security program I used to do that! Curses!!!

That still does not answer the email problems that some other folks are
reporting and nobody has address that issue yet.

Hi

Ok !

Well about others mailproblem there can be a lot beacuse
some users PCs can be heavily infested, it can be problem with for
example Hotbar removals or Incredimail.

I belive the same tactic to disable WD functions must be used and
also to be sure about what WD has removed if so.

But it´s a challenge with WD and "automagic" removals and blocks and
for sure a user with a little knowledge about a Windows OS will meet
severe problems will this totally unknown.

I must received one of the email that I sent to myself from my hotmail
account. It says it was sent at 15.50 EST. It is now 23.00 EST. SNAIL Mail
or hijacked mail?

This is for everyone's information. What ever my email problem is, I do not
believe that it is caused by Windows Defender. I have sent myself at least 6
email from my hotmail account to my AOL account, using AOL to access
hotmail.com. I only received 1 of them and that took several hours.. I also
opened Internet Explorer and navigaged to hotmail.com and sent myself another
email. I came to my AOL email inbox within 2 minutes. There may be several
explanations for this weirdness, but I do not believe that Defender is one of
them.
