As long as my computer is on... any one using it can go my inbox of past
emails and open them ... Prior to asking for any password ( i have a password
that keeps me from retrieving but how can you put one that keeps someone from
opening the mail ?just opening the mail programs show everything in the in
box. Does anyone know if this can be changed?

If privacy is important, do a Windows Log Off whenever you leave the computer.

Thats my option? It seems to me if vista was out on the market three years ago and the came out with XP ...that would be the convienant new up grade to have with Outlook . By where if someone tried to get into you account a window would pop up asking for a name and password...( what a cool idea...oh thats out dated now people can just log on to your account if you go to the bathroom without shuting off your windows ..How convienant!! This really sucks!!
Can someone tell me if there is any reason I can't download an old copy
of Outlook on my vista operating system? Will it work properly, so I can have
the convience of outlook and swich from Idenities...The old more improved
privacy feature etc etc.???

You can lock your computer by hitting Winkey-L, instead of logging out. Need
to enter password to unlock.

Good shortcut! I have no password, so that command doesn't provide
security for me, but nice to know that's available should I ever need it.
Who knows, some day I may have some unsavory housemates...

The "security" of the Identies feature was fake. Anyone could go into your
user space while you were logged on and take your dbx file and read all of
your mail.

So it gave you a false sense of security. If you log off, you no longer
have such, and you have real security.

This is a very bad shortcoming of Windows Mail.

Outlook express was so much better. Why on earth didn't Microsoft port that
feature of Outlook Express over to their new mail program?

I don't know of any mail program that allows you to open it without a
password and snoop around all of the existing emails.

Microsoft needs to fix this immediately

Anyone could have opened your messages in OE. The password just gave you a
false sense of security.

If you want privacy, set up different user accounts... that's what they are
for. To separate your stuff from someone else's stuff.

The OP does not specify what mail program is being used. If it's Outlook and
a PST file is used, you can password the PST file. No one can see messages
until the password is entered. But that only protects against the casual
lookers...it's pretty easy to defeat the PST password given the time and
opportunity.
