email notification

Does anyone know if theres a way to be notified when i receieve an email with out having outlook fully open and running, i've looked at all the options in outlook but wondered if i'd missed something or if there is a download available.

ps im using outlook XP (2002)

You can _buy_ such a product, but I've not seen any freeware that will do
it.
