email notification sound not working

I cannot get Outlook 2003 to automatically play the email notification sound
on my new computer (MCE 2005). The sound is set correctly in control panel ->
"sounds and audio devices" and works fine. When I check the advanced email
tab in Outlook, all of the boxes are checked. If I then hit the OK button,
the sound will play every time a new message comes in, but only while that
session of Outlook is active. When I close the program and restart - NO
SOUND! I have to go through the whole process to manually "enable" the sounds
again. It's almost like Outlook isn't saving the settings from one seesion to
the next (although the boxes are still checked every time I look). This isn't
a critical error but one of those little things that drives one NUTS! Anyone
have any ideas?

Do sounds in other programs work correctly after shutdown and restart? If
yes, then I would try a Detect and Repair found under Help in any Office
program.

Thanks Milly,

I just tried that and got an installer error saying "This patch could not be
opened...". Sounds like there are bigger issues here? This is a new computer
and I'm using the trial version of Office 2003 that came preinstalled. Should
I try a new install? I have a set of registered Office 2003 disks I could use.

Thanks again

If I were you, I would uninstall the trial version, reboot, and then install
your retail version.

I just checked and even though the repair thing crashed, now the sounds are
working correctly. Go Figure!!!

I like the idea of doing a clean Office reinstall from my disks. I also have
the problem of not being able to run Office auto-update from the Microsoft
website. I get a similar error message saying it can't find the installer
*.msi files.

What's the standard procedure for saving all emails before reinstalling?

Thanks again
