In these groups every one seems to want to get rid of the above feature, but
I'm going to buck the trend.

It's *never* worked on either of my two machines (laptop and desktop) since
I installed XP, and I'd like to know how to activate it - on the desktop
machine, anyway. (Well, *I* think it'd be handy).

I've ticked the box in TweakUIXP.

I've created a key,
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\<myemailaddress>,
and I've put in it (maybe this is wrong) a Dword "MessageCount" with a value
of 1.

But I get nothing on the welcome screen. As so many people want to get rid
of it, I'd have thought it was the default, but it's never worked.

What have I done wrong, and is there anything else I have to do? Maybe
there's a service that has to be running?

TIA Tony.

Hello Tony,

This works for Outlook and Outlook Express only, AFAIK

1) Go to Start => Run and type in "regedit" {without the quotes} and
click on OK.

2) Navigate to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

Undo what you did previously in the Registry in this key

3) Look for a key named:

MessageExpiryDays

Double-click on this and change (Edit) the value from 0 to 3

4) Close the registry editor, and log off and back on again, or
restart.

.................

If the MessageExpiryDays key doesn't exist, you can create it
manually:

1) Navigate to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

2) Go to Edit => New => DWORD Value, and type in:

MessageExpiryDays for the Value Name.

3) Enter the Value as 3

4) Close the registry editor, and log off and back on again, or
restart.

The Value you set is the number of days of unread mail that will be
reported (3 in the above example).

Hi, Claymore & nass,

Thanks for the replies. I've done what you both said, each at a time and
then both together. Still no joy. I wonder if there's a service that should
be running.

regards Tony

Hi Claymore,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I've done what it says on the link
you posted and still no joy. Is there maybe a setting in Outlook Express
that could be wrong?

regards Tony.
