Hi,
looking for Mail Notification program to work with mail server "without POP3" ,
only SMTP (I think, our administrator try to hide this information).
IMAP notification program failed to connect the server so I understand that SMTP
is an only option.
I would like to find the way to determine the kind of our mail server.
Thanks

The POP3 Server receives your Mails, and the SMTP (Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol) Server is for sending mails. Hence you
wouldn't most likely receive ever a Message via SMTP.

You can determine the type of an SMTP server by using telnet to
connect to its port 25, but that probably won't help you because SMTP
is not generally used to receive mail by individual users.

If your administrator won't help you, then you need to check the
settings for your own e-mail client to find out how IT checks your
mail. Server names (or IP addresses), port numbers and protocols have
to be listed in there somewhere.

Once you've got those details, the folks in may be
able to help.

SMTP is used for both sending and receiving internet emails.
For security reasons most providers don't allow you to install an SMTP
server on your local PC to receive email yourself.

POP3 & IMAP are for accessing already received mails in a mailbox on a
server from a remote computer.
