[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto]. I don't have it.

You must re-create that key. If not the mailto: links won't work.

Click Start, Run and type:

REG EXPORT HKCR\Mailto C:\mailtoinfo.txt

Then open C:\mailtoinfo.txt using Notepad and post the contents here (in
your reply).

In some cases, the key would be present, but the user don't have "Read"
access to that key/sub-keys. Check the key Permissions as well.

I have the same problem

I have found that the registry keys for mailto are locked or corrupted. The
command line below gives: "Access is denied".

Opening the registry gives "cannot open mailto: Error while opening the key"
when the mailto key is clicked. It cannot be renamed or deleted from the
registry.

other user accounts on the same machine are fine!

any help or advice welcomed!

thanks

Thank you - yes this eventually worked.
The permissions on mailto in the registry were broken in three places:
HCR\mailto, HLM\Software\Classes\mailto. When these were fxed, I then had to
fix permissions on HCR\mailto\shell\open\command which was also still
orphaned.

The URL Protocol string was ok once the permissions were fixed

Have you any idea how these permissions were changed? There are no
indications from any of my virus checking and spyware tools. It seems that a
number of folk are suffering similar problems!

cheers
Jeremy
