and it works fine

I have removed all AV and still no receive we use XP Pro on all

but same error message

any ideas

The error you describe indicates a problem locating the server you've
defined, indicating a domain name issue, perhaps. Can you telnet to the POP
server? Here are soem general troubleshooting techniques:

Also check your Firewall to make sure Outlook is allowed.

If that doesn't assist you, please post back.

Thanks for the reply

The problem is this computer specific if I replace the computer with
another one and set up the email it works fine

and this email can be set up on any of the computers on the network
and works fine

I assume that something on the dell is blocking the email but I have
run out of ideas
we had a similar problem with another machine and I changed the ip
address and it cured the problem

I think it would be easier to set your PC's to use DHCP instead of using
static IP's.
Perhaps the Outlook profile is corrupted, close Outlook create a new one:

http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm

If that doesn't resolve it, I would suggest going as far as to blow away the
user's profile on the PC. Delete the NTuser.dat file but first make sure you
back up the user's data, including shortcuts, My Documents, bookmarks, any
files saved to the C drive, etc. Deleting this file will force you to
completely recreate the user's profile, including Outlook.

I have deleted the profile from the pc and still no joy I have 2
computers with the same problem both Dells

one thing I noticed is that the profiles on both computers was
username.(domain)

ie john.hardy all the other computers on the domain have just the
user name ie John

I unistalled Mcaffe from these machines is it posibble they have
blocked the email also msn will not sign in either I assume there is a
connection there

Does this Dell have Media Direct on it? Check the Add Ins, something may be
causing an issue with Outlook.
