When I try to compose a new email i receive a message
that says: the form that requires Word is either busy or
cannot be found so the form opened in Outlook editor
instead. How can I get the word editor to work?

You can turn Word on and off as your default e-mail editor
either for all new message or for one message.
For all new message, go to Tools-Options-Mail Format-
select Use Ms Word to edit email message check box

For one new message,
Actions-New Mail Message Using-Ms Word

I have done what you have suggested but it still will not
work. should i compose the emails in HTML, rich or plain
text?

Are the versions of Word and Outlook the same? They must be the same
version. You cannot, for example, use Outlook 2002 and expect to use
Word 2000 as the e-mail editor.

I believe the form referenced is the email.dot file. Do you have one?
Maybe it got corrupted. You could extract and replace it from the
default one in the office1.cab file on the installation CD.

Have you yet tried to run Detect and Repair under the Help menu?

If you are using Outlook 2002, then apply the latest patches for Office.
