Is there any way to add an email program as an option under "Control
Panel/Internet Options" ... so that it can be set as email default?
Currently, it does not appear as one of the choices. Thanks!

Try this route...

Open Windows Explorer and click on TOOLS|FOLDER OPTIONS|FILE TYPES tab
Select the URL:Mailto entry if available, and click on ADVANCED
Select the OPEN choice, click EDIT
In the box, point to the desired mail program (To find it, use the Browse
button, if necessary)

Make note of what's already in the box, in case you want to revert to it.

Larry,

The program should add itself to and create all necessary sub-keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail]

Once you set the program as default [using IE Options], the mailto handlers are changed to reflect the value of your custom mail client.

Sure, which client? Here are a few that can be added automatically:

Restore OE to the E-mail List in Internet Options (Row 9)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/restore_oe_client.reg

Restore Hotmail, Outlook and OE under Programs (Line 250)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Reset OE for Send To, Mail To, Send Mail (Line 64)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Restore Outlook Express as Default News Client
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\News

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
