Hi
I am going to try again because I can't find anything in the help to
sort this out for me. I have about 3 G of emails, of which about 2g
is really "archive" type material.
I currently have Outlook 2002 and wonder if that would be better than
Eudora. To work that out, I have to see if there is some way to
actually import all of my Eudora data into Outlook.
I have personally imported mail from Eudora using Outlook, but I don't
recall all the details. IIRC, the import will place the imported material
into your primary delivery location. I don't think you get the choice of
specifying which Personal Folders file to use or which folders in Eudora to
import. I do recall the import was quite seamless.
Given that Outlook doesn't want mailboxes greater than 2g, I would
need probably at least three folders. Clearly I can makIf I want to
search, I would have to do it in each folder - yes?
I would set up three Personal Folders files, titled in whatever way made
sense. I would select the first to be the primary delivery location (in
Control Panel on the Delivery tab of the profile's Properties page). If you
have a choice of which messages to import from Eudora, choose an appropriate
group of messages and import them. Exit Outlook. Go back to Control Panel,
choose another of the Folders files to be the primary delivery location and
import some more. Repeat with the next Folders file until all Eudora
messages are imported.
I could move some of my archive stuff out of Eudora for the initial
import, then bring it back for import into a different folder?
That might not be a bad idea. Some articles I read when searching on the
web for background for this answer also indicates that importing from Eudora
to Outlook will modify the times of every message to the import time. The
advice there was to import into Outlook Express and then use that to export
to Outlook. This will preserve message dates.
This may be a more practical way to go in general. It will give you the
ability to select which folders of Eudora you wish to import, making
exporting from OE to OL more easily segmented. since I don't believe
importing into Outlook directly allows you to choose which Eudiora folders
to import.
The next question will be the email features of the two programs
compare in theory and in practice. Any thoughts?
As far as the Email features go, I don't think there's a clear winner.
Eudora certainly takes fewer system resources and if you're interested only
in Email capabilities, Eudora may be your better choice. If you want the
other, non-Email features of Outlook, however, there is no choice. Eudora
simply doesn't have them. Only you can decide. what works best for you.
Why not use them both in parallel for a while and see which you like better.
