What's currently available ? Last time I asked this question I think
the answer was Calypso. I am wondering whether there is/are other
options now ?

Ideally one that could check a POP server's emails and respond to the
sender if certain criteria weren't met eg. "Okay" in header, Bloggs as
sender, etc. In other words a "challenge-response" system.

Regards, John.

Most decent mail programs that support filters can do this. I use Eudora
(free, sponsored or paid version all can do it).

You do have to exercise an element of caution in setting up the filters
to avoid looping....if -say- your autoresponder gets talking to another
one, or helpdesk software, they just email each other back & forth until
stopped or your email program explodes.
That goes both for proper autoresponders and (less so) for email filters
on your email app.
