email attachments

others can't open attachments we send them and we often
have problems opening attachments sent to us

What kind of attachments? Do both parties have programs that are
capabable of opening these attachments? Having the same-named program -
WORD, for example - does not guarantee that all .doc files can be opened.
There are various versions of WORD.

Plain ascii text attachments can be read by most any recipient.
