I cannot open some email attachments because I get a message saying that
I need to create a file association in the folder options control panel.
I have tried the 'help' pages but I'm totally confused.
Can someone tell me how to create such an association please?
Thanks in anicipation.

The message means that Windows doesn't know what program to open for the
attachment. Files (data) are created in programs, in that particular
program's format. In order to read a file (this would be your
attachment), you need to have the program in which the file was created
installed on your computer OR a similar program that is able to read
those types of files.

Turn on the ability to see file extensions by going to Control
Panel>Folder Options>View tab and unchecking the box next to "Hide
extensions for known file types". Apply/OK out. Now look at the
attachments from your email (which you should be saving first and not
trying to open from within your email program). You will see the name is
something like filename.[some letters]. The three letters after the
"dot" in the file name make up the file extension which tells Windows
what program it needs to open to read that file. Post back with those
letters and we'll be able to tell you what program you need to read the
attachments.

The .pps extension indicates that these are PowerPoint presentations.
You can see PowerPoint presentations three ways:

1. By having PowerPoint (part of MS Office) installed. This will enable
you to see and edit the PowerPoint presentation. Microsoft Office is not
free, you would have to purchase it.

2. By having the free PowerPoint viewer installed. This will enable you
to see but not edit the PowerPoint presentation.

3. By having a program installed that can open and edit PowerPoint files
such as the Presentation module in OpenOffice. OpenOffice is a free
office suite which is available from www.openoffice.org.

Thank you so much for your help. I can now spend the evening browsing
all the emails I filed that I was unable to open previously.
With grateful thanks, Eirlys.

You're very welcome. Please take precautions when opening email
attachments, even from people you know, because that is one of the prime
ways of getting your computer infected. You might want to make sure your
antivirus is a current version (not earlier than 2007) and its virus
definitions are updated.

You have a beautiful name, btw.

Cheers,
