Email addresses added to 'hidden' address book?

This is making me crazy: If I reply to an email that has been sent t
me by someone who is not in my Contacts, their email address seems t
automatically get saved into an address book somewhere, but I can'
find it.

I have auto complete set, so when I start a new message to 'Mark', th
one I have in my contacts comes up as well as the one who is not in m
contacts, but who has sent me a message that I've repiled to.

Where do I have to go to find this list of addresses, how do I get ri
of them, and how do I prevent this from happening?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Assuming you're using Outlook 2002 or later: The AutoComplete feature works
off addresses you've previously typed in, not against your Contacts folder.
If you want to delete individual entries from the AutoComplete cache, start
typing in a name and when the list comes up, point to the entry you want to
delete (so that it's highlighted) and press Delete. To delete the whole
cache and start over, look for a file with an .NK2 extension and rename it
or move it. Outlook will start a new cache file the next time an e-mail
address is typed into the To: box.

Note that if you're using Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to search in
hidden and system folders to find the .NK2 file (it also helps to have file
extensions visible).

Jocelyn,

Thanks for that. It helps and it doesn't. While it's easy enough t
delete-on-the-fly, that only works for addresses I'm aware of. I'
sure there have been addresses cached from messages I've replied t
once, and now can't recall.

When I was using Outlook Express, I could see the list of addresse
that were in my address book, and could easily go down the list an
delete the ones that had been added by Express.

Now that I'm using Outlook (2002, SP-1 under XP, Home), I can no longe
see that list, and it's getting quite annoying to have these addresse
periodically pop up when I start a new message.

Also, I tried to search for *.NK2 files but came up completely empty
no hits :confused

Unfortunately, there's no way to view or edit the entire cache file in
Outlook. You'd have to delete the whole thing and start over if there are
too many wrong addresses in it to find and delete them one by one. Since
you're using Windows XP, did you enable searching in hidden and system
folders, and are hidden files visible? Do you have file extensions visible?
The .NK2 file must exist or you wouldn't have a cache of addresses.
