You need to supply a little more information. What is the specs of the
eMachine you wish to upgrade? If the system does not support booting from
CD, it is doughtful the system is a good candidate for upgrading to XP.
If you check the prices of current retail system with XP installed, I
believe you will see purchasing a new system with probably more than double
the specification of what you are trying to upgrade would be a better
choice. If you want to upgrade your current system, supply more info.

Buddy, I have had extensive experience with eMachines support.
And with my T2080 (which is just your T1842 with more RAM ,
in effect).

First, I've found that you may have to use the 'other' CD drive,
if you have two of them.

Second, I've found the same thing, and that it may depend on
what CD you're trying to boot. For example, I always make back-up
copies of various installation CDs (Drive Image, for example).
The originals boot, the copies do not.

Third, I hope you're not taking about the 2 CDs that came
with the machine. One is Drivers only, the other is a Ghost
image of your hard drive as it was when they shipped it. It can
only be used for clobbering your hard drive by restoring it to
that condition.

Fourth, you can look at the CD you're trying to boot. See
what's on it. If it has anything like install.exe or setup.exe
or autorun, you might be able to use that to get it started.

I found you can e-mail (e-mail address removed) and
state your problem in great detail, and within a day or so
you will get a very polite, and frequently useful, answer.

Good luck
