OK this concept of security and protecting me from myself is getting a
little old FAST. I have a 1GB USB drive that I use to carry files
back and forth from work. When I go to copy data from the USB drive
to my HDD (C:) I get a series of pop ups warning me that I am
attempting to copy files that I shouldnt be and to be sure of what i
want to do. I think its some sort of User Level Control thing. Well
I KNOW what the hell I need to copy and I dont need to have to click
3-4 extra click every time I copy from the USB drive (E:) to the HDD
(C:). So i go to turn off the User Level thing and now I am always
prompted that my security is at risk and that I need to turn that crap
back on. Look it is NOT Microsofts responsibility to protect me from
myself to the point that my computer is hardly usable. Maybe I am
missing something and I hope like hell I am... I am logge don as the
Admin account so if anyone should not be warned it shouldbe me. Can
someone tell me how to turn off all this crap and NOT get the 'you are
at risk' warnings because I want to take responsibility for my own
data?

Thanks

Most probably. And that would be... NTFS permissions on the folder you are
copying your files to. If you have them configured to allow write access
only for Administrators group, you'll see UAC prompts.

Right-click folder in question, select Properties, open Security tab. Make
sure appropriate accounts have write access to this folder.

Open security center. On the left bar, click the link "Change the way
windows notifies me". On the dialog that appears, tell it to not notify you.
This will stop it from warning you that you are at risk. You are by the way.

It is not about protecting you from yourself, more about protecting you from
programs that pretend they are you and are performing administrative tasks.
I suspect that this has nothing to do with user account control and all
about system files on the usb drive that you are unintentionally copying off
the usb drive to your hard drive - such as desktop.ini files. Do you have
"hidden folders" visible, or "protected operating system files" visible? If
so, try restoring the default to "hidden".

Thank you for the informative reply. As we all know you are ALWAYS at
risk no matter what you do. I just dont need windows asking me 3-4
times to verify every little task I do. Its MUCH more than annoying
to have to click click click click to simply copy a file from one
drive to another when replacing an older version and thus
overwriting. I appreciate security but it does lok like MS dumbed
down Vista so much that in many instances its all but unusable...

Hello David,

Why are we humans such creatures of habit?

If one has a very contagious disease, and their doctor instructs that person
to avoid close contact with other humans, is the doctor controlling the
patient, or, protecting the patient as well as family members and society?

Vista not only protects the individual user from troubles and problems,
Vista, by design, protects other computing users by doing things as you
described,

So, will you take a short time for learning Vista's inherent security
features? Or, will you treat Vista, our worlds most state-of-the-art OS, as a
typical PnP OS?

One user replied, I've been doing this stuff a very long time including
installing my old applications that I've been using for many years, and then,
after installing theses old favorites apps, against Vista's Security Rules,
nothing other than troubled filled conflicts result; then wrongly assigns
blame toward Vista for user induced conflicts... go figure.

Will you consider taking just a bit for learning the new Vista Features as
well as Vista's security habits, while using our worlds most state-of-the-art
OS before critiquing Vista? By the way, all participants within these Forums
are volunteers, not employees of Microsoft; with very rare exceptions.

I can only assume you've never tried Linux...

I never mentioned shit about installing apps. I merely am copying a
FILE from E: to C: and I have to click 3-4 times to 'verify' that I
want to do this. There is nothing at all to 'learn about Vista'
relevant to this process. Simply highlight and CTRL-C then move to
destination and CTRL-V. End of story. I dont need my OS protecting
me from myself to that damn extent. If moron users want all that "Are
your sure you want to copy this file?", "Are you really sure?", "NO I
mean are you REALLY REALLY sure" prompts thats fine and dany, but i
should not be forced to deal with that because some folks are afraid
of their computers...

I run several *nix boxes and as with ANYTHING that is on line, it has
its risks.

I was referring to the admin authentication dialogs that pop when one needs
elevated privileges... in Linux as in Vista.
