Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I just bought the newest installment in the Elder Scrolls series, Oblivion,
but my computer doesn't seem to be able to read it. I've checked the
specifications and I think their right, though I'm not sure if I'm running
the correct video card. How do I check that? The specifications I need are:
- Windows XP (got that)
- 512 MB system ram (pretty sure I've got that)
- 2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processer (My computer says I have an
Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU, 2.80 GHz processer and the processor speed is
2.73 GHz)
- 128 mb DirectX3D compatible Video Card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver
(I checked for updates the DIrectX 9.0 and downloaded the DirectX 9.0c
update. Not sure about the Video Card though. Don't know how to check that)
- 8X DVD-ROM Drive (Elder Scroll III requires that and since I can run that,
I assume I have that.)
- 4.6 GB free hard drive space (Got that)
- Directx 9.0c (As stated, I downloaded the update, but it seemed to take an
awfully short time to do, so I'm not totally sure if it worked)
- DirectX 8.1 Compatible Sound Card (Again, Elder Scrolls III needed that
and I was able to run the program, so I must have it.)
- Keyboard and Mouse (Got those).

I know, a lot of questions, but I'm not a computer guy, I just like to play
games. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers
Mark R.

The computer will not autorun the program. If I try to open the disc, it
doesn't even register it as being in the CD drive.

I need a DVD Drive? I guess that could pose some problems. Are they easy to
get and install?

Hold that last thought. I checked the CD driver and it lists it as:
HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8487B
Device type: DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Manufacturer: Standard CD-ROM drives

Computer also says it's working properly. So, maybe that's not the problem...

I've got a feeling that drive isn't a DVD drive, pop a DVD film into it and
see if it can read it.

DVD drives can probably be picked up for $20. Fitting them is pretty
simple, assuming the computer isn't too weird. 8-) Or an external USB drive
would probably be about $40.

Hi Marklikesrocks,

The price Paul quoted you for a DVD drive is right on the mark! :-)

You might want to spend an extra ~$30 though and buy a DVD
burner. You'll be able to store a lot more data on your media, and
create full backup sets of your hard drive on just a few DVD discs.

Yeah, it must be the CD drive. Popped in Hitchhikers Guide and it was a no
go. Drive couldn't even find the disc in the drive after spinning and
buzzing for a few minutes, just like with the Oblivion disc. Do DVD drives
come with instructions? I'll need all the help I can get, unless I can find
an external drive. Thanks for the input. Mad because I already spent the
money on Oblivion, but now I'm determined I'm gonna play Oblivion come hell
or high water.

Hi Marklikesrocks,

Yes, the drives normally ship with installation instructions,
however you might ask the folks at your local computer
shop for some guidance, or even ask them to install it. :-)

Where did it say you needed to update DirectX?
I'm fairly certain XP has 9.0c standard or at least with SP2 it should.

I have Oblivion and it is a DVD so you need a dvd drive to read it. They
are very easy to install, look at your CD drive and you will see a big ribbon
cable coming out of it and going into the motherboard. You will also notice
there in another plug on the ribbon near your cd drive. Plug this into the
back of your new DVD drive, plug in the power (u can use the same power chord
as thd cd). Reboot and your done.

You can even get a DVD burner around $40

Please don't forget to UNPLUG YOUR PC before installing hardware.
