I have problems ejecting a CD from my PC. The button doesn't work and eject
software within XP doesn't work. I have to restart PC each time and then it
works.

This problem occurs after I burn a disc in Itunes it seems to me.

Then it will work haphazardly at times.

Is there a fix to this?

Tks all.

I use XP Serv P 3, Home Edit, FireFox 3.5

Swap out the optical drive for a known-working one. The drive is failing.

It is possible that you load software (on Windows startup, during login,
or as an application that you load) that grabs the device and refuses
access commands to it. A long time ago, installing a Creative Labs
sound card included a utility to "help" manage the CD/DVD drives (by not
letting them spin-down as quickly; i.e., it would keep them spinning to
avoid cycling the drive due to long-enough idle periods between
accesses). Problem was that it also might lockup the drive so that
other programs could no longer access it.

Software, like CD/DVD burning programs can lock the tray. You pressing
the eject button won't work during that time. If the burning program
crashes or otherwise fails to release the drive, the tray remains
locked.

Have you yet tried booting Windows into its Safe Mode and retesting?
What CD/DVD burning software are you using? After rebooting and BEFORE
ever using that burning software, does the device work okay when using
it to play back audio and video discs?

I tend to agree with what "VanguardLH" wrote in his post.

Just to add - if, after you have finished burning the cd - you were to
close the 'iTunes' app AND ALL instances of Windows Explorer - then wait
awhile - you stand a better chance of the manual 'eject' button on the
drive working - without having to reboot...

OTOH - why not quit using 'iTunes' altogether!

Tks Tim, makes sense to me, closing Itunes first. Happens right after I
burn a CD on Itunes. Appreciate Vanguard's thoughtful reply also.

I use Itunes exclusively for Podcasts. Have been a heavy podcast user for
years and still use the Ipod Shuffle, am hooked beyond any hope.

Billy,
Just one more thought - can you not use iTunes to download music
/ podcasts to your hard-drive, then use OTHER burning software (either
Windows built-in or 3rd-part other than iTunes) to create your CDs/DVDs
?

Yes but Itunes is quite easy, tks Tim.
