Egads File/Print sharing!

I have had a laptop/desktop running on a network for over
a year (both XP Pro machines) and recently the File/Print
sharing has stopped working.

The machines "see" each other (within workgroup list and
also can ping between them) but when I try to access one
from the other I am told that network path couldn't be
found or that I may not have permission to access the
resource.

I am working as an administrator on both machines.

I have not changed firewall configuration.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Print/File sharing.

I have renamed the machines and also the workgroup.

Anything else that I should try doing before I go mad?

Thanks

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

I have NetBIOS enabled over TCP/IP and only one protocol for File/Print
sharing

Not sure how to "permanently disable" firewall, but it is disabled.

Any thing else I should try?
