Whenever I use anykind of video effect, whether its a transition, effect or title, Windows Movie Player completely closes without any warning window or anything. It's just gone from the screen including the task bar. This didn't use to be the case and it been a while since I've used it so I suppose it could be any number of things.
 
You probably have installed a new coded since then that MM2 does not like

I found that removing the file, DivXAF.ax, from the windows\system32 directory resolved this problem. The symptom I was seeing was anytime I tried to select a transition or effect, MM2 would close without generating an error.
